Vengaya Thugayal (onion chutney)

Very tasty, sweet and spicy chutney for bread and rice.

Ingredients

  • 3 medium sized onions, chopped finely
  • 2 tsp urad dal (small black beans)
  • 2 tsp channa dal (split chickpeas)
  • 4 dry red chili peppers
  • 1/2 tsp tamarind paste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • salt to taste

Preparation

  • fry the dals and the red pepper in 1/2 tsp oil until it gets roasted and keep aside
  • simmer the onion in the rest of the oil until it is transparent and very light brown
  • grind the roasted dals, onions, tamarind paste and salt into a paste
