Sukhi Channa Dal

Delicate but very tasty dal.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup channa dal
  • 3-4 cups water
  • salt to taste
  • 2 * 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • small stick of cinnamon
  • 3 pods green cardamom
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp fenugreek leaves

Preparation

  • Wash the dal and let it soak for 15 minutes. Drain and cook until soft (but not mushy) in the 5 cups of water, with added salt and 1/2 tsp turmeric.
  • Heat the ghee on a low flame. Add the whole masala (cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, bay leaf, cumin seeds) and leave to splutter for a couple of minutes.
  • Add the onions, fry until light brown.
  • Add cooked dal, 1/2 tsp of turmeric, chili, lemon juice, sugar, fenugreek leaves, and optionally some more salt, leave for a couple of minutes and serve.
