Onion bhajias

Delicious fried onion cookies, great as side dish or apetizer. Serve with mango or tamarind chutney.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 tsp onion seeds
  • 1/2 tsp nigella
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 200 gms gram (chick peas) flour
  • 100 gms rice flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida
  • 2 green chilies, chopped finely
  • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro leaves, chopped
  • 2-3 onions, sliced in even, not too thin slices
  • oil for deep frying

Preparation

  • heat the onion, nigella and cumin for a minute in a non-stick pan, cool a bit and grind coarsely
  • sieve the gram flour and rice flour in a big bowl
  • add all the spices and salt, add some water to make a paste
  • stir in more water until you get a thick batter
  • add cilantro and chilies and stir
  • heat the oil, dip the onion slices in the batter and fry until brown and crispy
