Channa Moong Dal

Simple and easy to prepare, but very nice side dish.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup green moong dal (dry mung beans)
  • 1 tbsp yellow channa dal (dry split chickpeas)
  • 2-2 1/2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2-3 cm ginger, grated
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tbsp coriander leaves, chopped

Preparation

  • cook the dals in 1 1/2 cup of the water with a pinch of turmeric until it's soft
  • when done, put aside
  • mix the garam masala, chili powder, turmeric and coriander powder with 1/2 cup of water
  • heat the ghee on a low flame, add the cumin and mustard, allow to splutter
  • add the ginger and fry until light brown
  • pour in the ground masalas in water and fry for another minute
  • add the dal and remaining water and stir well, bring to a boil
  • add the salt and lemon juice and stir, serve garnished with chopped coriander
